Recently I watched a streamer that I normally don't care about because he is a problematic male on the left but he was ripping into a male grifter I hate even more. This streamer used a term that actually somewhat expanded my understanding of misogyny: "misogyny tourist"
For years, I attributed men's performative concern for fandoms in the context of misogynistic outrage to grifting. However, grifting only applies to men who actually gain popularity and/or money from acting as a fan of something they have no clue about then claiming "women are ruining X". I did not uderstand what is the average normie gaining from sliding into fandoms, claiming to be a concerened fan, dogpiling on women in the fandom, then leaving without ever engaging with the subject of the fandom after the dogpile dies down.
I introduce to you "tourism": In fandoms, a tourist stands for a fake fan who never picks up any product of the media they claim to be the fan of but adopt the language, or aesthetics, claim a character as their favorite without knowing anything about it purely based on looks and vibes, maybe read a wiki summary or two to appear knowledgeable, or just claim to be fans without any engagement at all. This is used to gain unearned social credit, appear "cool" to real fans, feel a sense of belonging, and trick people into friendships based on lies. In the art world and subcultures they are also called posers.
This is how it dawned on me that these motherfuckers are using misogyny dogpiles in fandoms they've never been part of to gain a sense of belonging, ease their loneliness, and make temporary friends. Rancid misogyny is their bonding activity.
Misogynistic outrage in a game franchises fandom? Here comes the misogyny tourist incel to pretend they play the games in question, just to bond in the comment section over misogynistic drivel
Series has a misogyny debate? The misogyny tourist who never watched a single episode arrives to fight in the comment sections on the side of misogyny.
Metal band related debate? Guy who only listens to hip hop suddenly knows that the female metal band is the worst metal band out of all metal bands.
I believe that misogyny tourists were the driving audience behind gamergate and misogyny grifter content creators. They are the main ones trying to drive women out of hobbies and arts.
I think this specific term should enter online slang dictionaries and maybe even political dictionaries. These fake as fuck men need to be shamed.
